TORONTO LIFE
Rob Ford

Here’s a new piece as part of an ongoing series with Toronto Life. The article is about how the city of Toronto, under the stewardship of the honorable mayor Rob Ford, it try to raise some dough by selling off it’s assets, like land, utilities, and historical building; you know, stuff we don’t need. I worked with Art Director Bradley Reinhardt on this, my original idea was to show a cheesy salesmen who is selling his own suit (who’s looks might just remind you of Ford), but Bradley said just go for it, so instead I wound up being able to do this fun caricature of Ford

The Happy Hooker

Last minute jobs are never easy, last minute jobs with generous revisions are seldom a treat, but last minute jobs with loads of revisions that involve dozens of drawings of curvaceous semi-clad women are not only nothing to complain about; they are the kind of job that’s makes you glad you never became an architect.

The piece required long hours of work that stretched into the night, sacrificed weekend plans, and a good deal of eye sight devoted to scanning encyclopedias of erotic art (Of which I have three), and combating the formidable distractions of Internet lingerie sites.

Take the case of “The Happiest Hooker,” three illustrations I did for a feature in Toronto Life’s December Issue. The article (written by Leah McLaren) is a profile of Chloe, a sophisticated and mild mannered Mother of two, who moonlights as a well-paid escort in Toronto’s high-end hotels.

Yet, in the end, I was very happy with what Art Director Jessica Rose and I had come up with: A unique (for me) graphic style, which drew inspiration from 1960’s designer Saul Bass, as well as 1960’s ladies-man Don Draper, to create illustrations with a playful allure that complimented the article. I was in short, the happiest illustrator.

THE WALRUS
Criminous Minds

If only every job I get could be about Noir fiction. — This was a piece on Canadian Crime Fiction, that talked about the genera of the genera. One of the books discussed, mentions the Peace bridge (the bridge between Can and the US) so i thought it might be a good place for a setting. I was searching for an image of when I found an amazing 1927, Canadian, (I think) stamp of the bridge. I could not determine the artist, but that design, heavily Art Deco, lent me the inspiration for this piece, though I substituted in the Don Valley Bridge in Toronto.

This is a new one. I recently completed a pretty massive project to design and draw an entire world, which was then animated for an online ad. Creative Director George Simeonidis over saw production of this large project, and over about a month we put together this animation, (George and his team did the animating and the bubbles, I just did the drawing). This was a really new experience for me, not only was it just a far bigger illustration than I’m used to doing, but I have rarely had my drawings animated. I even practiced a bit of my own animation in this, developing a character turn (which took about a day and appears for 0.5 seconds in the video). It was amazing to see the way everything came alive in the end and how the hundreds of hours we poured into this, turned into a very beautiful 20 seconds
